Confocal Scanning Laser Microscopy (CSLM) is a technique for obtanining high-resolution optical images with depth sensitivity. The key feature is its ability to acquire in-focus images from selected depths, a process known as optical sectioning. Images are acquired layer-by-layer and reconstructed allowing three-dimensional reconstructions of topologically-complex objects.

New designs of digital microscopes now use advanced CCD and optics to enable wide range zooming with auto-focusing. Multiple images of the same specimen can also be displayed simultaneously with varying zoom scale.
